FORT ST ANGELO, KANNUR

HIDDEN TOURIST GEMS:

TODAYS HIGH LIGHT

FORT ST ANGELO, KANNUR

Tucked at a peninsula on a top of a small hill in KANNUR (Kerala- 280 kms from Bangalore, 90 from Calicut) is the 500 year old portugese fort ST ANGELO.

On a small hill Surrounded by sea on all three sides, with waves lapping at the bottom and the verdant greenary around, the queat and charming FORT lies hidden from the maddening tourist crowds. The sunset from this spot is a must watch and I am attaching some photos of this place.

PHOTOS SPEAK BETTER THAN ANY WORDS

Since I moved to KANNUR, this is my secret place. This is where you can find history wrapping you all around and where you will forget yourself at the breath taking beuty of this place

Brief history:
Courtesy WIKEPEDIA
Don Francisco De Almeida of Portuguese constructed this fort in 1505 AD. The Dutch captured the fort from Portuguese in 1663 they sold the fort to the king Ali Raja of Arakkal kingdom.
In 1790 the British seized the control over this fort and became one of the important military centres of the British in Malabar.

Inside St.Angelo's fort
Many people believe that there is a secret tunnel in this fort. This tunnel was built underneath the sea to the Thalassery Fort which is 21 km from Kannur fort. This under passage is said to be used by soldiers to escape.
The Moppila Bay Harbor and Arakkal Mosque are near the fort.
The fort, is now under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India.
